There are different types of domain sellers & traders. Once you understand this, you should be able to develop a good strategy for selling domains. The number one answer is to promote yourself, your domains store/portfolio, and social media accounts. Build up a presence in Google by posting videos, buying backlinks, and inviting the right type of users to view/buy your domains.
Outbound sales are done by contacting companies, or previous owners of the domain. Also contact any other interested parties, name, city, niche. It’s important to have contacts in the niches which you’re promoting. And write a decent description, so that people can find you.
If your domains aren’t selling as quickly as you’d like, it could be your strategy, or your domain pricing. Or you might not have the type of domains that people are looking for. This may mean creating categories & subcategories in your portfolio. You may wish to try selling different categories in different places. This will also prevent unwanted categories & niches from being displayed to the wrong audience.
Domain Flipping VS Holding
Domain marketplaces, Auctions, & Brokered domains will get a different result in price. The same applies for wholesale flipping, and end user prices. If you want to make a small amount of profit daily, and want to build a name for yourself quickly, you may want to consider selling your domains at a cheaper price. You will still be profiting. This depends on how many high quality traffic domains you’re flipping, and how much you add on top. This could be anywhere between $20-$200 per domain. And if you sell a couple daily, then you’re quids in!
The other way to sell domain names is to hold domains. In this method you’ll be parking the domains, or possibly developing the domains, It all depends on the domain itself, and the backlinks & traffic it has. If you can’t generate a large SEO friendly website, then domain parking is a way to earn a few dollars per month, which will help keep up the running costs. There are a couple of websites which have auto developed pages for domains, like new domain registrations. One example I have is a one word domain I registered. Or, an aged domain without backlinks. Shrewd business people will think bout the long-term, rather than short-term value. While it may cost to renew your portfolio every year, if you hold on, you should reap the rewards.
Those who hold names will usually yield thousands, or hundreds of dollars (even millions) IF they invested in PREMIUM DOMAINS. Experienced domain investors, brokers & such earn millions. You can always contact a broker. And ask them for a few tips also.
Dropped & Expired Domains
On occasion you can purchase some fabulous names with backlinks & authority. Some people drop their domains or websites due to sickness, and others have other businesses they’d rather focus on. Some people simply forget to renew their domains. And I think it’s reasonable to hold the domain for a certain length of time, and offer it at a reasonable price, before selling it or auctioning it elsewhere. Many domain flippers simply sell the domain on to make quick profit. But this is not a very ethical way to sell domains, after all. Being ethical pays in the long run. Just think of one company that grabs peoples expired domains, and offers them for thousands. Is that ethical? And do they have a good reputation?
Planning Your Sales
It’s a heavily saturated market. And unless you have a business & marketing plan, or social networking & IT skills, you will need a lot of money and patience. Domains can take weeks, months, years, or even decades to sell. Once you’ve established your domains business, you can then sell domains anywhere on the go, including the beach! Many of us dream of that lifestyle at least. During Winter there are usually more domain sales.
Sedo Promotions
For a small amount of money you can promote your domain on the Sedo home page, or do a category feature. Buying an auction listing is also a great way to sell a domain quickly. You can also get a free auction listing when you sell your domains as Make An Offer. Accept the offer, or send to auction. The risk with that is, you may not get a better offer.
Domain Selling Secrets
A good way to make a little bit of profit is to use BrandBucket. You can get a logo created, and you can liquidate if you wish. This sis a feature I didn’t see the first time I used randBucket. And I dropped some names. Now I can only wonder how much I could have made.
The most used domain sites are Flippa & Sedo. But there are many more Registrar Marketplaces, Websites like BranBucket, and Premium Networks. You can read more about getting into Premium networks, and getting your domains seen everywhere, in the next post.
